Description

Thanks -giving and -gifting seasons elevate our message of gratitude to our donors and dressmakers. This year you helped us dignify 875 impoverished girls with bright new sundresses: Guatemala 584, Honduras 225, Uganda 60 and 6 more going Dec. 10.

Wearing rags increases susceptibility to trafficking. An identified dress, by prominent label on the front, warns would-be traffickers this child is somebody, matters to people. What girl's self-confidence is not boosted by wearing a unique new dress?

The Joy is in the Giving!

The Joy is in the Giving!

Description

The most fun part of the Holidays is giving gifts to others -- especially when you know you will be giving them something that they want!
The trees are out with wishes for something needed by Verde Valley Caregivers' client neighbors.
The public is invited to select gift tags from the trees, purchase the needed items, and return the wrapped gifts to a box located near each tree. Neighbors typically ask for warm socks, slippers, PJs, or blankets. Some have unusual needs. One neighbor writes, “Dear Santa, after losing most my teeth I have been depending on my electric coffee grinder to be my “molars” to grind my daily rice and the various seeds and nuts. But sadly, my grinder stopped working. So, if you could bring me a new one, oh boy, that would sure make my Christmas a very merry one!”
Many neighbors report this is the only present they receive at Christmas time. A neighbor recently commented: “This is the only gift I will receive this year. Thank you for making it special.”
The trees will be up at the following locations through Dec. 14:
* Sedona Public Library, 3250 White Bear Road, Sedona
* Cottonwood Public Library, 100 S 6th St, Cottonwood
* Camp Verde Community Library, 130 Black Bridge Loop Rd, Camp Verde
* Sedona United Methodist Church, 110 Indian Cliffs Rd, Sedona
* Oakcreek Country Club, 690 Bell Rock Blvd, Village of Oak Creek
For more information please call (928) 204-1238, ext. 8105.

That public spotlight made this years Project School Bell a huge success thanks to the generous contributors.

New Members Needed

See all wishes from Friends of the Forest

Description

On Thursday, September 22 the Friends of the Forest (FOF) is hosting a new member welcome event at 360 Brewer Road in Sedona. FOF looks forward to seeing not only new members but also anyone interested in learning about and hopefully joining our organization.

Starting at 2:00 pm, Friends of the Forest will present short descriptions of the activities you can volunteer for: removing graffiti, maintaining or patrolling our trails, serving as a docent at one of the Cultural Heritage sites, assisting visitors at the Visitor Center, helping coordinate our public education programs, creating photo documentation of archaeological sites, providing River Ranger support, collecting water samples, maintaining a wilderness air quality monitoring station, or working on one of the many special projects in support of our local Wildlife Biologist. In short, there are opportunities for everyone.

If you are new to the area, you may not yet be aware that Friends of the Forest is sponsored by the National Forest Service. Our mission is to support the Red Rock Ranger District by providing resources to help accomplish critical tasks. We are the largest such volunteer organization in the country.

With visitation increasing every year, more and more stress is put on our natural resources. FOF helps relieve that stress, enhancing the natural experience for visitors and residents alike.

To help Friends of the Forest protect the natural beauty of Sedona and the Verde Valley, please join us at 2:00 pm on Thursday, September 22 at the Keep Sedona Beautiful building, 360 Brewer Road in Sedona. To learn more, visit www.friendsoftheforestsedona.org.

Sedona City Streets Litter Lifter Routes Available

See all wishes from Keep Sedona Beautiful

Description

Keep Sedona Beautiful’s litter lifter program has recently expanded into a few City of Sedona streets. City street routes can be easier due to slower speed limits and quiet neighborhoods. Once a litter lifter has accepted a route, it’s theirs for life or for as long as they want, so sometimes it takes years for these routes to open up again. Here is a unique opportunity to pick up one of these routes. Don’t wait…call us or email us today to reserve your beautiful Sedona route! Also, nearly every day someone comes to the food bank with food they have collected with a group or which they themselves have purchased to donate to us. Every bit helps.

SHELTER NEEDS SUNSCREEN, HAIR BRUSHES & SOCKS

See all wishes from Verde Valley Sanctuary

Description

Our Emergency Shelter for victims of domestic violence are in need of sunscreen, hair brushes, socks (small, medium, large), wash cloths and flip flops. Clients always need shoes (and socks) that are easy to put on to wear around the house. All sizes and genders… from little kids all the way up! The wash cloths seem to disappear at an alarming rate.

The 28-bed shelter provides 24/7 trauma-informed care for clients for up to four months. On-site advocates provide safety planning, support groups, case management, intensive advocacy, support programs and activities for children who reside in the shelter, transportation, self-care support, emotional support, and education about domestic violence and sexual assault. Additionally, advocates help survivors assess their needs, identify their options, find resources, apply for jobs, set goals, locate permanent housing, and navigate the legal system. Services also include referrals to medical, mental, and emotional health providers and other community resources.

NEED THRIFT STORE VOLUNTEERS

See all wishes from Verde Valley Sanctuary

Description

We Need Thrift Store Volunteers – Due to COVID-19 we have lost the majority of our volunteers. We do clean vigorously every day to keep the germs away. Volunteers receive 50% discount at all stores!

These award-winning thriftiques are the “Gold Standard” of thrift stores. Nothing goes on the floor without being cleaned, steamed, polished, spruced up, and attractively displayed. Thriftiques are also good stewards of the environment; recycling all merchandise that cannot be sold.

These boutiques are the public face for the Sanctuary, and often the first contact with donors, volunteers, partners, and even clients. Shelter residents moving to independent housing shop to obtain needed clothing, furniture, and houseware items for setting up their new place of residence; at no cost to them!

Volunteers Tasks: Serve as cashier; Maintain cleanliness inside and outside of store; Receive donations & give tax donation receipts; Sort incoming donations; Decorate the store; Assist customers on sales floor; Price, tag, and steam clothing; Communicate our mission and support to VVS.

Description

Verde Valley Caregivers wish you a happy and prosperous 2022!
One way to ensure a happy new year is to volunteer! It's true. Helping others adds to your own happiness and feelings of self worth.
Consider volunteering to help our elderly neighbors, many of whom are living alone; many of whom are very poor. If you are not interested in providing transportation, there are a number of other ways to help. Walk the dog. Make friendly visits or phone calls. Help a person set up and use their smart phone or their voicemail.

Benefactors of Red Rock State Park is Recruiting Board Members

See all wishes from Benefactors of Red Rock State Park

Description

The mission of the Benefactors of Red Rock State Park is “To help Red Rock State Park sustain and expand its role as a vital resource for Environmental and Cultural Education, as a model of riparian habitat preservation, and as a location for environmentally sensitive recreation.”

We fulfill our mission by working under the direction of the Park Manager, funding initiatives and projects that would otherwise go unfunded. For example, we pay for transportation for groups of elementary school students to attend interactive and hands-on classes at the park. This past year, we applied for and received a $10,000 grant to replace old interpretive signs and create new ones. The signs have been fabricated and will be installed shortly. We’ve funded the installation of a new Outdoor Classroom that will be erected in December.

You can learn more about us by visiting our website at www.benefactorsrrsp.org.

If you’re interested in contributing to our efforts as a member of our Board of Directors please email chairman@benefactorsrrsp.org, and we’ll contact you.

Durable Fabric & Bias Tape

Description

Our enthusiastic dressmakers love the bright-colored cotton and cotton-blend fabrics you donate, so much so that our stores are getting low. And as always, any color of extra wide double fold bias tape is in demand. (We need two yards per dress. In bulk, it's about $25 for 50 yards.) We can pick up your donations.

July 4th Veterans Raffle

See all wishes from Rotary Club of Sedona Village

Description

The Rotary Club of Sedona Village wishes that everyone will participate in the Cornelius Veterans Hospital Benefit Raffle July 4 weekend. For 17 years the benefit raffle, organized by veteran John Cornelius, has contributed to the comfort and quality of life for veterans in long term care at the VA Hospital in Prescott.

This program funds a "store" where veterans can "shop" for a variety of clothing, toiletry items, phone cards, colorful blankets and other items at no cost to the vets. On their birthdays veterans receive birthday cards and flowers. There are movie nights, complete with popcorn.

Feeling lucky? This year, instead of one prize for the year, there are several chances to win a prize on the last day of the weekend. The Memorial Day drawing had 12 winners with prizes from first-class ride on the Verde Canyon Railroad to local restaurants/gift shops. Learn more and buy tickets online at https://sedonavillagerotary.org/page/veterans-project. Saturday, July 3 through Monday, July 5 tickets will be sold in person in front of Clark's Market in the Village. For those feeling more grateful than lucky, donations are also welcome.

Uganda School Update

See all wishes from Jan Tanis

nopic

Description

Uganda schools are again closed. This time for 42 days. It is truly unfortunate, since all the BCP-sponsored students board at school and are safer there. Covid is taking its toll on student morale. Now is a wonderful time to sponsor one of the students on the website. They need a boost. Schools are set to re-open on July 19th and to learn of a new sponsor would be the gift of a lifetime. Their futures are in the balance. Contact Jan Tanis for information or check out "The Children" at BwindiCommunityProgram.org.

Description

Hope House of Sedona held it's official Groundbreaking Ceremony on June 1st and construction will begin soon! We continue with the $100,000 Homestretch Campaign, our fundraising effort to help us make the house "move-in ready." To open, we must have funds for furniture, appliances, landscaping, a security system, and operating expenses. We still need $60,000 to complete that campaign, and we appreciate donations large and small to help us achieve this goal. Please join us as we provide transitional housing for our local homeless children and their families. Donations can be mailed to: Hope House of Sedona, 54 Bowstring Drive, Sedona, AZ 86336 or visit our website at www.hopehouseofsedona.org and make a donation electronically. THANK YOU!!

Volunteer Meals on Wheels drivers

See all wishes from Sedona Community Center

nopic

Description

The Sedona Community Center is looking for volunteer Meals on Wheels Drivers.
In anticipation of resuming our 5 day a week service, we are looking for friendly, flexible, and dependable people; preferably full time Sedona residents, we have a shortage of drivers in the summer due to vacations and really need those spots filled.
We ask that you commit to one day a week, time frame is typically 10:30 am to 1:30 pm.
Please sign up for 1 year, if you love it then please stay on with us. You can ask any of our drivers on how rewarding it is!
It is a 6-week process for fingerprint clearance, which is paid for by the Center, and our Meals on Wheels coordinator is very thorough in her training with you and is always around to answer questions. You also can request a meal on the day you drive, and we will give you one.
If you are interested, please call the Community Center Monday, Wednesday, or Friday between 8am and 1pm at 928-282-2834.
