Verde Valley First Books believes that by promoting an enthusiasm for books in young children, we can also encourage literacy and a love of reading later in their lives. Our mission is to ensure that 3 and 4 year-olds living in poverty in Sedona and the Verde Valley have age appropriate books of their own in their homes.
Verde Valley First Books sponsors monthly story hours for 3 and 4-year-olds in preschools, Head Start and daycare centers in Sedona, Cottonwood, Camp Verde, Rimrock, Cornville and the Yavapai/Apache Nation. Volunteers read the story, review letters and words, then discuss the story with the children. They also encourage the children to ask someone to read to them at home. The children then take their own book home, and at the end of the school year, they will have at least nine new, age-appropriate books in their homes.
